Description

1848 Half Dollar, Top-Grade MS65
WB-102, Repunched Date

1848 50C Repunched Date, WB-102, MS65 PCGS. CAC. The 4 in the date is clearly recut below the diagonal and the crossbar on this conditionally rare variety. Wiley-Bugert believe this variety to be an 1848/47 overdate, although remnants of a 7 are not discernible on this piece. As a date, the 1848 Seated half is rare in Mint State, and none are known finer than the MS65 grade level. Rich forest-green, lilac-gray, and tan colors swirl about this satiny and carefully preserved Gem. The eagle's left (facing) leg is not fully struck, but this is of little importance. No Motto Seated half dollars of any date are rarely encountered with such lofty preservation. Population: 5 in 65, 0 finer. CAC: 4 in 65, 0 finer (5/16).
Ex: Portland Signature (Heritage, 3/2004), lot 5821.
