Description

1860-O Half Dollar, MS65
Type Two Reverse, WB-103

1860-O 50C Type Two Reverse, WB-103, Die Pair 5, R.3, MS65 PCGS. CAC. Reverse Hub Variety Two. There is a sizeable amount of space between the tops of the LF in HALF, this feature confirming the attribution of the hub variety. As an issue, the 1860-O (1.2 million pieces produced) is not particularly rare in Mint State. (Wiley and Bugert, 1993, assign the date a Low R.4 rating in all MS grades.) In Gem, however, the 1860-O is conditionally rare. This is an originally toned survivor whose otherwise antique-copper overtones yield to rose-gray tinting throughout much of the reverse field. Both sides are appreciably sharp in strike, although we do note a little softness of detail over some of the obverse star centers. Solidly graded with only a few scattered abrasions that are well concealed by the toning. Population for all 1860-O halves: 16 in 65, 8 finer. CAC: 6 in 65, 3 finer (5/16).
