Description
1872-S Half Dollar, MS65
From the Eliasberg Collection
1872-S 50C Medium Small S, WB-102, Die Pair 3, R.3, MS65 PCGS.
CAC. Ex: Eliasberg. Medium-Small Mintmark. The 1872-S ranks
among the most elusive San Francisco Mint Seated half dollars, as
indicated by perusal of PCGS/NGC population data. Soft violet,
gray, orange, blue, and beige patina is slightly deeper on the
obverse of this lovely Gem, and the strike is strong throughout.
The planchet shows striations on both obverse and reverse, but are
more obvious on the reverse, and the partially prooflike fields
offset the motifs at various angles. Exquisitely preserved
throughout. A handsome coin with a great pedigree. Population for
all 1872-S halves: 3 in 65, 1 finer. CAC: 2 in 65, 2 finer
(5/16).Ex: Albert S. Elwell Collection (Lyman H. Low, 7/1903), lot 1020; J.M. Clapp; John H. Clapp; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 2020; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2010), lot 2551, which realized $19,550.
