Description

1901 Five Dollar, PR65 Deep Cameo
Exceptional Preservation

1901 $5 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. JD-1, Early Die State. There were 140 proof fives produced in 1901, and of that number a relatively high percentage still exist. John Dannreuther estimates between 80 and 100 pieces are known today. The reason such a large percentage are still extant is explained in Dannreuther's proof gold reference:

"Collectors buy the frosted Proofs before they will buy an issue of similar rarity lacking frost or missing detail. Full strike, full detail, full frost, and deeply reflective fields on Proofs are the traits that make them bring extraordinary prices when they are offered ... It is hard to get a collector to part with examples that display all these features."

That is a short but accurate description of this coin. The surfaces are bright yellow-gold with thickly frosted devices that are set against fields of unfathomable reflectivity. This is the first Deep Cameo we have offered at auction since 2012, and it is the only PR65 certified by PCGS with three finer (6/19). NGC has graded two pieces PR65 Ultra Cameo with five finer.(Registry values: P1)
