Description
Outstanding 1908 Motto Premium Gem Ten Dollar
1908 $10 Motto MS66 PCGS. Ex: Duckor. President Theodore Roosevelt's decision to omit the motto IN GOD WE TRUST from the eagle and double eagle coinage was overridden by Congress. The Mint Act of 1908 mandated that the motto be restored. On the ten dollar coins, it was placed in the field left of the eagle's breast, where it remained for the duration of coinage.By Indian Head eagle standards, the 1908 With Motto, with an impressive mintage of 341,370 business strikes, is a "common" issue. Once the Gem level has been reached, however, there are few coins to satisfy collector demand. Indeed, PCGS and NGC have certified fewer than 180 pieces in MS65 and higher grades. Less than 60 of these are Premium Gems, the grade of the specimen offered in the present lot, and another ten or so grade MS67 and MS68.
This example displays satiny-like texture and excellent luster, along with rich apricot-gold color and subtle greenish undertones. The motifs are sharply struck, with excellent definition apparent in the Indian's hair and headdress feathers. A couple of unobtrusive marks on each side do not distract in the least, and are entirely within the parameters of the MS66 grade designation. A truly outstanding piece for the gold connoisseur. Population: 25 in 66, 7 finer (3/06).
