Description

1897-S $1 MS66 Prooflike PCGS. While 1897-S dollars often display partial or fully prooflike fields, it is a challenging format to locate in Premium Gem condition. This is a brilliant example that displays nearly unabraded, flashy mirrors and lightly frosted devices, with a smooth cheek on Liberty. Viewed at a slight backward tilt, the coin reveals considerable white-on-black cameo effect. As with most '97-S dollars, the strike is sharp and the eye appeal is far above average, since these were especially well-produced coins. The surfaces are extraordinarily attractive and clear of distractions (seemingly high-end for the MS66 grade). Population: 49 in 66 (5 in 66+) Prooflike, 4 finer (6/18).
Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 11/2005), lot 3585, where it realized $2,530.
