Description

1916-D Walking Liberty Half, MS67
Top-Grade Condition Rarity

1916-D 50C MS67 NGC. Adolph Weinman's artistry was clearly favored by Mint Director Robert Woolley and Treasury Secretary William McAdoo, who selected winning coin designs in the 1916 competition for the dime, quarter, and half dollar. Designs for the dime, half dollar, and reverse of the quarter were initially awarded to Weinman, while Hermon MacNeil was selected for the obverse of the quarter, and Albin Polasek's work was rejected. Later, the reverse of quarter was also given to MacNeil, but the dime and half dollar remained with Weinman.

Unlike the quarter dollar, Weinman's Walking Liberty half dollar was coined at all three operating mints during its first year of production. The 1916-D had the highest mintage of the three (just more than 1 million coins), but all are rarities in Superb Gem condition. This piece is among the finest certified. The strike is sharp, and the glistening luster is devoid of bothersome abrasions. Champagne interiors cede to lovely amber, sea-green, and olive-gold toning in the margins, giving this top-grade 1916-D Walker tremendous eye appeal. Census: 10 in 67 (1 in 67 ), 0 finer (5/16).(Registry values: N4719)
