Description
1918-S Half Dollar, MS65
Lustrous and Lightly Toned
1918-S 50C MS65 PCGS. Despite a mintage approaching 11
million pieces, the 1918-S half dollar is scarce in Gem Mint State,
and anything in higher grade is all but unobtainable. The issue
also comes weakly struck, as Bruce Fox writes in his series
reference: "Liberty's hand, leg and the branches she holds tend to
blend together as one entity."This Gem, nonetheless, displays an above-average strike. The area to which Fox refers is not quite fully struck on this example, but it does exhibit sharp delineation, and there is distinction between the thumb, hand, branch, and gown. Both sides exhibit strong mint luster and are lightly toned in pastel shades of sky-blue and gold-tan. A few unobtrusive obverse marks are consistent with the grade. Housed in an old green label holder. Population: 33 in 65 (1 in 65+), 3 finer (5/16).
