Resplendent 1864 Seated Liberty Dollar, MS65

1864 $1 MS65 PCGS. CAC. In 1864 the Philadelphia Mint coined a mere 30,700 business strikes, and few of those coins survive today, due to hoarding activities during and after the Civil War. Still fearful of the outcome, even into 1864, most people had little faith in paper currency that could become worthless. Instead, they desired to have actual hard money, gold and silver coins. Today, we think of hoarding activities as the source for increased numismatic supply, but along with the hoarding came melting. Who in the South, for example, would want to be caught with a stockpile of Northern coinage. Instead, they melted the coins into bars or lumps of gold and silver. Today, PCGS has only certified 22 examples in all Mint State grades, from MS60 through MS66. The total includes four in MS64, six in MS65 including the present piece, and a lone MS66 piece (11/08). In fact, this coin is one of just 61 No Motto Seated Liberty dollars that PCGS has certified in MS65 or finer grades.
Housed in a green-label PCGS holder, this satiny Gem has fully brilliant silver surfaces with vibrant luster and boldly detailed design elements. A few minuscule surface marks on each side are of no concern to the quality of this splendid specimen. This piece is only the third PCGS MS65 example of the date that we have handled in 15 years since we began archiving our sales in 1993, with none in finer grades.
