Description

1842 Small Date Half Dollar, MS63
Large Letters Reverse

1842 50C Small Date, Large Letters, Reverse of 1842, WB-101, Die Pair 6, R.3, MS63 PCGS. The Plain 4 in the date identifies the Small Date numerals, while the Large Date reverse legend is the style of 1842. Numerous reverse die cracks -- some not fully formed -- help identify this Small Date variety. This is a Select Uncirculated example with frosty and brilliant surfaces. The strike is sharp throughout the obverse and also on the reverse despite the many die cracks. Few 1842 Small Date, Large Letters examples are finer. Population (All Small Date, Large Letters varieties combined): 8 in 63 (1 in 63+), 9 finer (12/25).
From The Austin Collection.
