Description
1797 16 Stars Half Dime, MS62
Rare V-3, LM-3 Marriage
1797 H10C 16 Stars, V-3, LM-3, R.5, MS62 NGC. 1797 was a
transitional year for star counts at the U.S. Mint. The first half
dime variety (LM-1) had 15 stars, one for each state as it existed
prior to the addition of Tennessee to the Union in 1796. LM-2 and
LM-3 show the correct star count of 16. Finally, LM-4 has 13 stars,
one for each of the 13 colonies, after the Mint decided that the
small obverse of a half dime lacked sufficient room to accommodate
an ever-expanding Union. LM-3 is likely rarest among the four
varieties, though it commands a lower price than LM-4 since the
latter is the sole 13 Star marriage. This LM-3 example is
pearl-white with glimpses of charcoal toning. The satiny surfaces
are nicely struck and refreshingly unmarked. From The GATOR Collection.
