Description
1926-D Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, MS63
Seldom Encountered Finer
1926-D $20 MS63 PCGS. CAC. While other issues in the
Saint-Gaudens series, such as the 1922-S and 1926-S, were once
considered great rarities, over the past 50 years substantial
hoards of those coins have been found in European bank vaults. In
fact, very few of the rarities from the 1940s and early 1950s have
withstood the test of time. However, the 1926-D remains a scarce
issue. Probably fewer than 600 pieces are extant today in all
grades, and the vast majority of those are graded MS62 or
lower. As indicated by the CAC sticker, this is a premium coin for the grade. Much of this appeal comes from the subtle interplay of reddish-golden and lilac color on each side. The surfaces are also remarkably clean for the MS63 grade. The only marks of any note are a diagonal series of shallow digs that trails down to Liberty's right (facing) arm from the T in LIBERTY. A short, diagonal contact mark is also located just below the bottom of the R in LIBERTY. Sharply defined in most areas, the only area of softness is seen on the Capitol building, but this appears to be a trait common to most 1926-D twenties. Population: 56 in 63 (1 in 63+), 28 finer. CAC: 5 in 63, 6 finer (4/17).
