Description
1796/5 Half Eagle, Fine Details
BD-1, Better Small Eagle Date
1796/5 $5 BD-1, High R.4 -- Graffiti, Scratched, Cleaned --
ANACS. Fine Details, Net Good 4. The Guide Book cites a mintage
of 6,196 pieces, but it is likely that many of those pieces bore
1795 dates. Only one die pair is known for 1796-dated examples,
struck with an overdated obverse die. This yellow-gold half eagle
has a surprisingly sharp reverse with noticeable luster, but the
obverse is well worn. The surfaces are bright from a thorough wipe.
An M (or W) is scratched into the reverse field under the eagle's
right (facing) wing, and scuffs are seen in the right obverse
field.Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 11/2005), lot 4113.
