Description

1860-O Eagle, AU58
Scarce O-Mint, Series Sleeper

1860-O $10 AU58 NGC. Variety 2. Rare in Uncirculated condition, this near-Mint State example is one of the few survivors of the final New Orleans eagle before handover of the Mint to non-U.S. authority -- first to the State of Louisiana, and ultimately to the Confederacy. No more eagles were struck in New Orleans until 1879. The mintage of 11,100 pieces circulated in the South, where most were lost to attrition. This example is lightly abraded with pleasing sun-gold color and suitable remaining mint luster. The coin retains sharp appeal as an underrated issue in a most-challenging series. Census: 24 in 58, 6 finer (5/16).(Registry values: P6)
