1853 Assay Office Twenty, VF Details
900 Thous., K-18

1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. -- Cleaning -- PCGS Genuine. VF Details. K-18, R.2. Over its short life, the issues of the U.S. Assay Office of Gold became less like ingots, and more like coins. The culmination of that process was Kagin-18, a hubbed twenty dollar variety with the shape and denomination of a Federal double eagle, but with a distinctive Assay Office design. The 1853 .900 twenties were struck in large quantity and represent the most available pioneer gold issue. This is a collectible caramel-gold example with abraded and lightly hairlined surfaces plus two small reverse digs near 1:30 and 7:30. A minor rim ding is noted at 11:30 on the obverse. Listed on page 414 of the 2025 Guide Book.
Ex: New York Signature (Heritage, 11/2013), lot 4799.
