Description

1878-CC Morgan Dollar, MS66+
Beautiful Reflective Fields

1878-CC $1 MS66+ PCGS. VAM-1B. This is a remarkably well-preserved 1878-CC Morgan, fully deserving of the lofty MS66+ grade. The strike is full, and the fields produce semiprooflike mirroring. Modest cameo contrast appears on the mostly brilliant reverse, while the obverse displays lovely sky-blue, mint-green, and lavender toning. Close study of the cheek and fields fails to reveal a single mentionable flaw.

VAM-1B is distinctive for having two heavy die lines through the IB in LIBERTY and a die scratch in the leaves just left of the wreath bow on the reverse. However, the date itself is scarce in high grade. PCGS reports 39 Plus-designated Premium Gems and only six Superb Gems finer (3/17). Prooflike coins are extremely rare this fine, and the present coin is just shy of a Prooflike designation at PCGS.(Registry values: P4, N2998)
