Description

1863-S Eagle, AU53
Seldom Seen Finer

1863-S $10 AU53 PCGS. Large S. The mintage of the San Francisco Mint 1863 eagle was about eight times that of its Philadelphia Mint counterpart, but the raging Civil War was also a great distance away from the West Coast, and there, these large-for-the-era gold coins circulated extensively. This issue is usually seen in Very Fine or Extra Fine grades, seldom in AU. This AU53 PCGS example is far finer than the norm, offering lightly marked and well-struck surfaces with deep orange-gold color and a high quotient of eye appeal. PCGS has seen but two submissions in AU53 with three finer: one each in AU58, MS60, and MS61 (1/14).
