Description
Finest Certified Robinson-Arkansas Half Dollar, MS68 PCGS
1936 50C Robinson MS68 PCGS. In 1936, The Texas Centennial Commission sponsored a bill to authorize five new reverses for the Texas commemorative half dollar. Not to be outdone, the Arkansas Commission demanded three reverses for their own coin. The bill for the Texas coin reverses failed, and the Arkansas request was scaled down from three to two reverses. The centennial side was on each Arkansas coin, but the obverse of the second coin was changed. Originally, it had been proposed that the reverse should represent "one side of a coin Ferdinand De Soto is supposed to have presented to an Indian woman in Arkansas during his exploration of this State." In the end, though, politics prevailed and the likeness of Senator Joseph T. Robinson was selected for the coin. The Robinson half is a coin that is easily abraded because of the large, smooth expanse on the face of the senator. This coin shows no apparent abrasions on either side and the surfaces are bathed in soft lilac-gray iridescence with splashes of orange-russet shadings that are most evident on the obverse. The frosty textured luster is full and vibrant. This is the finest example certified of this issue by either of the major grading services (1/05).
