1907 High Relief Twenty Dollar, AU58
A Special Coin for the Collector, Wire Rim

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim AU58 PCGS. Frank Leach had barely begun his new job as Mint Director when he was called to the White House on November 22, 1907 for a meeting with President Theodore Roosevelt. The president wanted the new double eagles struck and struck in high relief. He was tired of the bureaucratic excuses and delays. In Leach's tempered words, Roosevelt suggested "some details of action of a drastic character." The result was the nearly immediate production of High Relief twenties, 12,367 of them, that occupied Mint staff throughout the remainder of 1907 and into the first days of the next year. The results were magnificent, and High Relief twenties have been high on collector's want lists ever since. This piece will certainly be pursued by multiple bidders. There is just the slightest hint of friction over the high points of the design and the luster in the fields is thinned a bit but complete. One mark on the reverse is of note, but it runs the same direction as the wing feathers and is easy to miss.(Registry values: N2998)
