Description

1878 7TF Morgan Dollar, PR64 Cameo
Reverse of 1878
Vivid Border Toning

1878 7TF $1 Reverse of 1878 PR64 Cameo PCGS. It is estimated that the 1878 7TF proof Morgan dollar had a mintage of only about 250 coins, by far the lowest proof mintage in the series. Of these, perhaps 200 pieces represented the Reverse of 1878 type. The Reverse of 1879 7TF proof is the "Holy Grail" of early proofs, in the words of Dave Bowers, but its Reverse of 1878 counterpart, here offered, is an undisputed second. PCGS shows just 85 examples of this issue in all grades, with only 24 of those in the Cameo category. There are 10 Cameos in PR64, and just five finer at that service (7/15).

This Choice proof Cameo is boldly struck, with a distinctive toning that gives the central devices a glowing appearance amid warm champagne hues. The peripheries draw the eye into the devices with deep aquamarine, violet, and sun-gold hues in concentric bands. Population: 10 in 64 Cameo, 5 finer (7/15).(Registry values: P6)
