Description
1874 Gold Dollar, MS67
Plentiful Type Three Issue
One of Five So Graded With CAC Approval
1874 G$1 MS67 PCGS. CAC. The strike is a trifle soft on this
Superb Gem. Both sides offer highly lustrous mint frost with
brilliant light yellow surfaces. A few minuscule marks are
consistent with the grade. The reverse has a small lemon-yellow
toning spot above the R in DOLLAR that may aid identification.Variety and Die State: Breen-6094. Only the L in LIBERTY is visible on the headband. Struck from perfect dies with no clash marks, die cracks, or signs of die lapping.
Population (6/15): PCGS reports 32 in MS67, one MS67+, and two MS68. NGC data show 30 in MS67 and eight numerically finer. Although that total is nearly four dozen submissions in MS67 at both services combined, it is noteworthy that this piece is among only five with the CAC approval.
Commentary: The 1874 gold dollar had a substantial mintage of 198,800 coins, and survivors cover a wide range of grades from circulated to Superb Gem. Those coins vary widely in eye appeal. Steve Duckor knows that careful selection (cherrypicking) of just the right coin is important for every issue, but especially for the common ones. Current bidders can benefit from Steve's knowledge and exceptional eye for quality.
Douglas Winter Commentary: The 1874 is the single most common Type Three gold dollar prior to 1879 in Superb Gem. There are many examples known in MS66 and MS67, but the population of MS68s is just two at PCGS, including a CAC-approved piece that was recently sold for $19,975 as lot 5237 in the Heritage April 2015 Central States sale.
Steve bought this coin from me at the end of 2013 as part of the group of gold dollars from the Vasquez Rocks Collection, where he had "first shot." It is a lovely coin with glowing natural color, extremely frosty surfaces, and a nice, sharp strike.
Provenance: Vasquez Rocks Collection; purchased from Doug Winter.
