Description

1905 Two and a Half, PR65
Sharp and Beautiful
Rare in This Grade

1905 $2 1/2 JD-1, R.4, PR65 PCGS. The certified population of the proof 1905 quarter eagle gives an unrealistic survival estimate. Only 144 pieces were struck, yet the combined PCGS and NGC census is nearly twice that. Over the past couple of decades, the grading services have varied in strictness when awarding grades to proof coins, and designating pieces as Cameos and Deep or Ultra Cameos was not always done. These factors contributed to an uncommonly high number of resubmissions, inflating the certified population for most grades. Most of the pieces that we have seen graded below the Gem level. It is reasonable to estimate that fewer than 100 1905 proof quarter eagles are known.

This Gem displays full detail and liquidlike mirroring, bathed in original apricot-orange color. Under a loupe, the fields reveal no mentionable lines or marks, and eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 23 in 65, 14 finer (7/25).
