Description
1787 'Muttonhead' Connecticut Copper
XF45, Miller 1.2-C
Ex: Stearns Collection
1787 COPPER Connecticut Copper, Muttonhead XF45 PCGS. CAC. M.
1.2-C, W-2720, R.3. Ex: C.H. Stearns. A middle to late die
state example with partial legends. Pieces from early dies exist
with full legends, and coins from late dies are known with only
fragments of the legend. Apparently, the unknown and unauthorized
maker enjoyed lapping dies. The scarce Muttonhead variety is
distinctive both for its oversized portrait and topless Liberty.
The present golden-brown representative is remarkably void of
contact and shows only minor granularity. The centers retain the
planchet texture, as produced. Listed on page 61 of the 2013
Guide Book.Ex: C.H. Stearns Collection (Mayflower, 12/1966), lot 171.
