1839 No Drapery Seated Quarter, MS66
Green Label Holder, Ex: Clapp-Eliasberg
The Second Finest Example Known

1839 25C No Drapery MS66 PCGS. Briggs 2-B. Ex: Eliasberg. Closed Claws. The eye appeal of this coin exceeds all expectations for the grade and issue. Original, frosty luster glistens across unabraded surfaces, illuminating bold definition through not only the central devices but also the border stars. Even for the border dentils showcase nearly full rounded throughout the perimeter of each side. Lovely amber, gold, russet, and sky-blue hues encompass much of the obverse, while the reverse yields similar colors but with a concentration of ocean-blue and violet in the lower and right-hand margins. One look at this coin, and it becomes apparent that it is truly an exceptional treasure of eye appeal and preservation.

The Eliasberg coin is the second finest 1839 Seated Liberty quarter known, and it is appearing here in only its second document auction appearance. The elder Clapp acquired it private from the Chapman brothers in the year 1900, and it remained in the Clapp family cabinet until 1942, when it was acquired by Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. as part of the greater Clapp collection. Eliasberg held the coin until his passing, and in 1997, it finally appeared at auction for the first time in Bowers and Merena's offering of the Eliasberg Collection. The cataloger of the Eliasberg coins called it possibly the finest known, graded "MS-66 or finer," and added: "Here, indeed, is a marvelous combination of exceedingly high numeric grade, beautiful aesthetic appeal, and an incomparable pedigree." Although the Bareford-Gardner coin is certified finer than this piece by margin of the Plus designation, we feel that the Eliasberg piece will come to be known as its equal atop the Condition Census, being thus far held back only by the fact it hasn't appeared at auction in nearly 30 years, and it still resides in a Generation 3.1 green label PCGS holder.
