1907 Wire Rim Ten Dollar, MS65
Bright Yellow-Gold Surfaces

1907 $10 Wire Rim MS65 NGC. The 1907 Wire Rim tens are technically classified as patterns and are listed as Judd-1901, but these pieces are nonetheless collected alongside the regular-issue coins that follow -- much the same as the equally prized 1856 Flying Eagle cents. Researcher Michael Fuljenz writes in Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century that the 1907 Wire Rims "most closely represent the original concept which sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and President Theodore Roosevelt imagined the new Indian Head coins to look like."

Also despite their classification as patterns, the coins are well-loved as first-year issues of the new Saint-Gaudens design, and perhaps half of the original mintage of either 472 or 500 pieces survives today: The 1907 Wire Rims tens were given out as VIP souvenirs at the time of production.

Original Wire Rim tens all have a distinctive appearance. The surfaces are uniformly bright yellow-gold with little (or none) of the reddish patina usually seen on High Relief twenties. The wire rim or "fin," in Mint parlance, is distinctive and completely surrounds each side. Examination with a magnifier shows only the slightest evidence of post-striking contact with other coins. There is, however, a distinctive but tiny spot of reddish-brown (probably an alloy spot) in the center of the cheek of the Indian. It is difficult to discern without a loupe, though.(Registry values: N7079)
