Description
1796/5 BD-1 Half Eagle, AU Details
Unused 1795 Obverse Die
1796/5 $5 BD-1, High R.4 -- Repaired -- NGC Details. AU.
Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b with a perfect obverse die and
lapped reverse die. This famous overdate uses an obverse die that
was completed for 1795 coinage, but remained unused. A 6 was
punched over the 5 for use in 1796. The actual mintage is unknown,
but was likely only a small portion of the 6,196 coins recorded for
the year. John Dannreuther estimates a mintage between 1,057 and
2,000 coins. Our own opinion is closer to the low end of that
range, perhaps 1,200 coins. This straw-gold example has brushed,
matte-like surfaces with an unnatural but strangely attractive
appearance.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# BFWU, Variety PCGS# 519862, Base PCGS# 8067)
Weight: 8.75 grams
