1871-CC Twenty Dollar, AU Details
Challenging Low-Mintage Carson City Issue

1871-CC $20 -- Altered Surfaces -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Variety 1-A. Three strike-throughs are prominent on the reverse. One curls downward across the eagle's wing from between E and D of UNITED, while a similar, smaller mark follows the bend of the eagle's neck. A third strike-through -- smaller and wider than the first two -- runs through the second C in the CC mintmark. These mint-related flaws may comprise the Altered Surfaces designation by PCGS, although the service may have additional -- but less obvious -- reason(s) for the lack of a grade.

Visually, the coin is attractive with luster remaining beneath orange-gold coloration. Small marks and abrasions pepper the formerly reflective fields on both sides. AU sharpness remains on the devices. The 1871-CC is normally considered the second-rarest Carson City double eagle. Often seen with damage, it is a nevertheless challenging issue and highly sought in all conditions.
