Description
Three-coin lot -- counterstamped Seated quarters. 1854 Arrows Seated Quarter, J. WAGNER, Fine Host; XF Counterstamp. Brunk W-72, Rulau Unlisted. Prepared punch, well-sized for a quarter. Original old-silver color and choice surfaces make this an attractive counterstamp. Researchers might want to check the gunsmith lists. Ex: Van Ormer Collection (Bowers and Merena, 9/1985), lot 2873; 1853 Arrows and Rays Seated Quarter, E. WELLER (obverse); J. TRUE (reverse), VG Host; VF Counterstamps. Brunk W-367 and T-433, Rulau Unlisted. Bold line punches. The E. WELLER mark appears unaccompanied on two large cents; J. TRUE is perhaps unrelated to the Weller mark. Ex: Van Ormer Collection (Bowers and Merena, 9/1985), lot 2900; 1855 Seated Quarter, J.S. WHEELER, VF Host; VF+ Counterstamps. Brunk W-453, Rulau Unlisted. Well-made small letters line punch. Also known on an 1846 large cent with A.N. WHEELER. J.S. Wheeler is struck twice, filling the left and right fields tangent to Liberty's portrait. Upper- and lower-case small letters make this a sharp-looking mark. Purchased from Stanley Steinberg on 11/5/1981.Auction Info
