Description

1857 Flying Eagle Cent, AU58
Double Eagle Obverse Die Clash
Snow-7, FS-403, Finest at PCGS

1857 1C Obverse Die Clash with Double Eagle, Snow-7, FS-403, AU58 PCGS. Overlays in the Snow two-volume reference demonstrate that the heavy clash marks through AMERICA correspond with Liberty's profile on the double eagle. One of three remarkable multi-denominational clashes seen on 1857 Flying Eagle cents; Snow-8 has Seated quarter clashes and Snow-9 shows Seated half clash marks. Snow writes "very rare in all grades ... most of these are below VF grade. The finest known is an AU58 ... in the Dr. Tom Fore Collection." That coin is the present lot, a well-defined and problem-free forest-green and lilac-red example. The A.N.R. catalog description noted that "this photogenic Flying Eagle has been illustrated in the Snow reference, the Steve-Flynn reference, and in Q. David Bowers' Buyer's and Enthusiast's Guide." Population: 1 in 58, 0 finer (11/15).
Ex: Larry Steve Collection (American Numismatic Rarities, 7/2003), lot 137.
