Description

1874 Double Eagle, MS64
Tied for Finest at PCGS

1874 $20 MS64 PCGS. The mintage of the 1874 double eagle issue was a moderate 366,780 pieces for circulation, but even then, the Philadelphia Mint double eagle yearly mintages were on a downslope that would culminate in the remarkably low productions of the 1880. Most of the 1874s circulated to some degree, as the average certified survivor is only Choice AU to AU58, and the vast majority of Mint State coins cluster around the MS60-MS61 threshold. An MS62 example (where PCGS has seen only 33 submissions) is a conditional rarity, and anything finer is virtually unseen. PCGS reports only four in MS63, and this MS64 example is tied for finest at PCGS with two other coins (5/15). Potent luster radiates from both sides, The strike is sharp throughout on original surfaces displaying apricot-gold over most of the obverse, with a splash of brass-gold in the central area. Apricot-gold dominates the reverse. A handful of small marks on Liberty's cheek and neck are consistent with the grade. To our knowledge, it has been nearly 15 years since an example in the grade of this piece changed hands at auction. An MS64 PCGS example traded for a strong (considering the timeframe) $39,100 in a Bowers and Merena auction in November 2000, lot 893. Interested bidders will no doubt realize that the opportunity to obtain an example such as this is fleeting, at best, as it may be many years to come before a comparable coin comes along. Population: 3 in 64, 0 finer (5/15).
