Description
1822/1 Half Dollar, O-101, MS66
High Condition Census
1822/1 50C O-101, R.1, MS66 NGC. This so-called 1822/1
variety shows an apparent underdigit amid the lower portion of the
second 2, on this coin very faintly due to die erosion and metal
flow lines. O-101 is a plentiful variety, but the present coin is a
remarkable and conditionally rare Premium Gem. It is tied with an
MS66 PCGS coin as the finest certified of the variety and is
Condition Census-quality for the 1822 half dollar as a whole. NGC
lists only a single MS67 coin finer, an O-105 representative
(4/16).This remarkable Capped Bust half dollar is also appealing as a type coin. Regardless of date or variety, MS66-quality Capped Bust halves are infrequently offered at auction. This piece displays a razor-sharp, even strike and vibrant cartwheel luster. Warm golden toning graces each side, and only a few faint grazes on the cheek are worthy of mention. An outstanding Bust half dollar and a virtually irreplaceable O-101 representative.
