Description

Pristine 1881 Gold Dollar, MS68

1881 G$1 MS68 PCGS. CAC. The one dollar gold and three dollar gold denominations of the 1880s show some remarkable similarities. Both are mostly low-mintage affairs, with a token small number issued yearly, and both came to an end in 1889. Advanced collectors and dealers of the day were not only aware of the small mintages, but they put aside some pieces that are remarkable condition rarities today. In fact, it is plausible that they may have had insider information as to when the series would end, given the cozy relations between some well-connected coin dealers and Mint personnel.
The 1881 gold dollar was produced to the extent of a mere 7,620 pieces, and the present Superb Gem representative boasts an impeccable strike that displays full details throughout. Frosty luster overwhelms both sides, and the pristine surfaces reveal nary a contact mark, as expected, even under a loupe. One of the finest survivors for a type or date set.
