Description

1885 Double Eagle in Aluminum, PR66
Judd-1756, Only Two Pieces Believed Known

1885 $20 Twenty Dollar, Judd-1756, Pollock-1969, R.8, PR66 PCGS. The regular double eagle dies of 1885. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. Like many of these off-metal strikings, whether in copper, aluminum, or another metal, they appear on the surface to be dies trial strikings. However, in many instances -- and certainly here, on the nation's largest and most prestigious gold coin denomination -- there was absolutely no intent to change metals. Many such issues were, in fact, delicacies made as part of complete sets for well-connected collectors -- usually outside, but sometimes those employed inside the Mint. Such is the case with this pattern, of which USPatterns.com says only two examples exist. Of the two examples, this is the finest by two points. The other piece (a PCGS PR64) last sold in our 2011 FUN Sale, and realized $34,500. Gold date and mintmark collectors may look to this piece as an exotic alternative to the usually bagmarked (but very rare) 1885 circulation strike double eagle or its sometimes stand-in proof striking.

The bright surfaces of this specimen show considerable mint frost over the devices with the usual resultant cameo contrast common to aluminum patterns. The devices are fully struck throughout. An important opportunity to acquire this rare late-date double eagle pattern. The next double eagle pattern known after this would be Charles Barber's abortive twenty dollar design struck in gold, the unique Judd-1773 dated 1906.
