Description

Luminous Near-Gem 1854-S Gold Dollar
First Year of San Francisco Coinage

1854-S G$1 MS64 NGC. The California Gold Rush had launched the gold dollar denomination in 1849, and when the San Francisco Mint opened its doors in 1854, it is only logical that it was one of the coins produced. This near-Gem representative, housed in a prior-generation NGC holder, is one of the best-preserved survivors and a flat-out gorgeous coin to boot. Both sides are luminous yellow-gold with an undercurrent of orange, while the reverse also exhibits diffuse reflectivity. The obverse is well-defined save for a hint of softness at the hair below the coronet. Census: 7 in 64, 2 finer (8/11).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25C2, PCGS# 7527, Greysheet# 8070)
