Description

1806 B-2 Quarter Dollar, MS64
High Condition Census, Late Die State

1806 25C B-2, R.2, MS64 NGC. This late die state Draped Bust quarter shows extensive clash marks on both sides, with severe die cracks and rim crumbling on the reverse. It is intermediate between states c and d in the Rea-Peterson-Karoleff-Kovach accounting.

This impressive piece ranks high in the Condition Census, with only two finer examples of the B-2 die combination recorded in the census listed in the same Rea, et al reference. The Choice surfaces are well-struck for the state of the dies, with few marks or signs of contact visible on either side. Full satin luster is visible beneath rich, natural antique lilac-gray and iridescent toning with exceptional eye appeal.
Ex: Superior (10/1995), lot 343. However, this is not the same coin that appeared in the Superior (9/1997) sale as lot 1896, as reported in the Rea, Koenings, Haroutunian Condition Census.
