Description
1955 Doubled Die Obverse Lincoln Cent
CAC-Approved MS65 Red
Green Label Holder
1955 1C Doubled Die Obverse, FS-101, MS65 Red PCGS. CAC.
This is one of the few coins in the Whispering Pines Registry Set
that omits that collection name on the holder insert, since it
remains in the green label PCGS holder from the mid-1990s. The fact
that PCGS, in its earlier years of study, considered this piece a
Gem Red coin some two decades ago, speaks to the incredible quality
of the coin. No 1955 doubled die cents at PCGS are graded MS66 Red,
but this CAC-endorsed piece comes about as close as possible
without crossing into that classification. The coin is largely
pristine. Frosty, luminous mint luster adorns glistening fields and
boldly struck design elements. Each side displays uniform, original
copper-pink hues and is thoroughly attractive. A couple faint
grazes near the right obverse rim above the date, and some faint
flecks on the reverse, are all that deny consideration of an even
finer grade. As it stands, this piece is within the Condition
Census of PCGS-certified full Red pieces (11/24).The 1955 doubled die is a curious variety in that it was knowingly released into circulation by the Mint. Ordinarily, coins struck from a defective die would be withdrawn from the hoppers of struck cents and melted, but in the case of the 1955 doubled dies, about 24,000 of the coins got mixed in with normal coins before the die error was discovered. These pieces were allowed to go out into circulation, and from there, they became a phenomenon, striking the intrigue of numismatists young and old. Our consignor's memories of filling in a Lincoln cent collection from circulation comes from the era when 1955 doubled dies were circulating in commerce. It is only fitting that the culmination of that early collection in the Whispering Pines Registry Set, include one of the finest 1955 doubled die cents known. Housed in a Generation 3.1 green label holder. Population: 22 in 65 (2 in 65+) Red, 0 finer. CAC: 5 in 65, 0 finer (11/24).
