Description

Superb Gem 1853 Gold Dollar
Sharply Struck, Originally Toned

1853 G$1 MS67 PCGS. CAC. Seated silver coins were hoarded from circulation during the early 1850s, since their bullion content exceeded face value. The Philadelphia Mint responded to the coin shortage by striking millions of gold dollars. Mintages peaked in 1853, the year silver coin was finally reduced in tenor. The 1853 is a plentiful type coin in lower Mint State grades, but Superb Gems are very rare. The present lustrous example displays green-gold and peach toning. The strike is full except on a few outer star points. Population: 6 in 67, 5 finer (11/11).
Ex: James Mossman Collection (Heritage, 1/2009), lot 3987, which realized $16,100.
