Description

1869 Three Dollar, MS63
One of Two Top Examples at NGC

1869 $3 MS63 NGC. The 1869 three dollar gold piece is a low-mintage issue struck to the extent of only 2,500 pieces for circulation, complemented by 25 proofs. The date is rare in MS63 condition, and only three coins have been certified in higher numeric grades at NGC and PCGS combined (all at PCGS). This attractive Select example exhibits well-detailed design elements with a touch of softness on the ribbon bow, as usual. Lightly marked yellow-gold surfaces exhibit prooflike reflectivity in most areas amid a scattering of minor contact marks on both sides. Eye appeal is strong for the grade. Census: 2 in 63, 0 finer (3/19).
Ex: New York Signature (Heritage, 2/2014), lot 5343; ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2014), lot 3830, where it realized $9,987.50.
