Description

Cameo PR66 1886 Gold Dollar
Excellent Late-Date Proof

1886 G$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. CAC. On its creation in the late 1840s, the gold dollar was meant to be a functional denomination. By the mid-1880s, it had turned into a gift-giving novelty, with four-figure mintages of proofs and most of the coins sold going to the children of the East Coast upper crust as holiday presents. This gleaming PR66 Cameo specimen may have been bought as a gift, but if so, it was kept remarkably well. Pale yellow-gold coloration is visible full-time on the frosted devices and at the non-"black" angles of the mirrors to the light. Marvelous visual appeal.(Registry values: P1)
