Description

Near-Gem 1847-C Quarter Eagle
Exceptional Quality, CAC Approval

1847-C $2 1/2 MS64 NGC. CAC. The 1847-C quarter eagle is a common issue by Charlotte standards and it is perhaps the best-made coin ever produced by this facility. Thus, it is perfect for use in a high-quality type set. It is likely that this lovely borderline Gem will wind-up in a type set as it is a fresh, frosty example that has a strike as sharp as one could hope for. There are a few tiny marks seen in the obverse fields; the reverse is Gem quality. This is the only Charlotte quarter eagle that is available in this grade with any degree of regularity. Given the fact that a nice MS64 generally trades in the $20,000 range, it is not an unrealistic purchase for many collectors.
The 1847-C is the most common Charlotte quarter eagle both in terms of overall and high-grade rarity. There are as many as three or four dozen known in all grades of Uncirculated. There are still no Gems accounted for but there are at least a half dozen properly graded MS64s, of which this is one.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 5-6/2007), lot 2165; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2010), lot 2101, where it brought $19,421.
