Description

1838 Eagle, AU
First-Year Issue, Two-Year Type

1838 $10 AU50 NGC. The 1838 eagle was the first of the denomination coined since President Jefferson discontinued the series some 34 years earlier, in 1804. The new Christian Gobrecht design that debuted in 1838 is accordingly a first-year issue of a two-year type, as the design with sharp rear truncation on the bust continued over to some 1839-dated pieces. This AU NGC-certified piece would make a perfect type coin. Only modest wear appears on surfaces that display considerable luster remaining amid the attractive medium-gold coloration. A scattering of marks appear, none particularly severe, the most blatant a couple just behind Liberty's mouth. Census: 11 in 50, 21 finer (4/13).(Registry values: N4719)
