1874-CC Dime, AU53
Problem-Free, Original Toning

1874-CC 10C Arrows, F-101, R.4, AU53 PCGS. On February 12, 1873 Congress passed the Mint Act of 1873. In an effort to facilitate the universal circulation U.S. coinage, the Act included a provision for a minute increase in the weight of the dime, quarter, and half dollar such that one dollar in subsidiary silver coinage weighed 25 grams. Thus, the weight of a dime increased indiscernibly from 2.49 grams to 2.5 grams. Chief Engraver William Barber added arrows flanking the date to reflect the change, as had been done in 1853 to indicate a decrease in silver weight. The design was used in 1873 and 1874. The Carson City Mint manufactured a paltry 10,817 1874-CC With Arrows dimes, making it one of the most elusive and sought-after dates in the Seated Liberty series. Most of the surviving examples are low grade, and many others have problems of one sort or another. This is not such a piece. The devices are well-defined with original russet and deep gray toning over each side. The few abrasions that are present are well concealed beneath the toning. A rare opportunity for the specialist. Population: 2 in 53, 6 finer (11/17).
