1652 Pine Tree Shilling, XF Details
Large Planchet, Rare Noe-6.1

1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet -- Environmental Damage -- NGC Details. XF. Noe-6.1, W-720, Salmon 5-Di, R.6. 67.8 gn. No pellets at trunk. First described by Richard Picker, Noe-6.1 is a very rare variant of Noe-6 distinguished by Boston Mint re-engraving of the letters IN M on the lower obverse. In particular, the I is short and sans serif with a pointed end. A different example of Noe-6.1 appears in lot 110 of the Hain Family Collection (Stack's, 1/2002), where it is stated "we have not recorded another." We suspect others exist, attributed simply as Noe-6. The die state is later than Noe-6 with prominent breaks on the reverse above the 6 in the date and through the M in DOM. This example is sharp but moderately granular and darkly toned. The planchet is wavy, as coined by a rocker press. Listed on page 39 of the 2014 Guide Book.
