Description
Undated St. Patrick Farthing, XF45
Circa 1670-1675 or Earlier, W-11500
From the Craige Collection
(1670-75) FARTH St. Patrick Farthing XF45 PCGS. CAC. Breen-212,
W-11500. Ex: Craige. this is the Sea Beasts variety with
"Masonic" punctuation according to Breen, and this variety is
plentiful in the context of St. Patrick farthings. The reverse has
a die flaw left of Saint Patrick's head, suggesting a "Siamese
Twins" variety label. Both sides are smooth and glossy with lovely
dark chocolate fields and chestnut-brown devices. Slightly
misstruck, as the brass splasher is well below the crown, missing
it entirely. The dies were crudely engraved with long dentils at
the lower obverse and reverse. Pristine surfaces for the grade,
with excellent eye appeal. This piece is likely the finest example
known from the Griffee 31-6/4a dies.Ex: Ted L. Craige Collection (Stack's-Bowers, 11/2012), lot 6156.
