Description

1885-CC Twenty Dollar Liberty, AU55
Elusive, Low-Mintage Issue

1885-CC $20 AU55 NGC. Winter 1-A. While not the extreme rarity its small, 9,450-piece mintage might suggest, the 1885-CC is rare in the context of Carson City double eagles from the 1880s. Some 20 to 25 pieces exist in Mint State, while Choice About Uncirculated pieces have seen strong price increases -- so far, that trajectory has not changed. Rich green-gold surfaces display peach-gold accents and give this AU55 example its original eye appeal. The fields are smooth and attractive for the grade. Soft mint luster resides beneath the patina, while marks include a long, curved abrasion from behind Liberty's eye to the chin/neck junction. Two smaller marks are seen at the cheekbone. A sharp strike weakens slightly at stars 1 and 2.(Registry values: N2998)
