Description

1898-S Double Eagle, MS66
Beautifully Preserved Surfaces
Only One Example Certified Finer

1898-S $20 MS66 PCGS. While the outstanding, Registry Set quality of this MS66 1898-S double eagle will be of great interest to the collecting community, we note that this example is one of two different repunched date varieties that exist for the issue. Here, the 189 date numerals are repunched at their base -- most noticeably at the 1. Another 1898-S repunched date variant we have seen exists with only the 9 repunched at its outer base.

This is an amazing Premium Gem coin with frosty orange-gold luster that illuminates the immaculate fields and pinpoint-sharp motifs. Canary-yellow and peach-gold highlights add a colorful dimension to the coin when rotated in light. A tiny nick on Liberty's jawline near the ear is the sole mark of any substance on this exceptional 1898-S. PCGS Population: 1 in 66, 1 finer (11/24).(Registry values: N4719)
