Description

1857-S Double Eagle, MS64
From the S.S. Central America
CAC Approved

1857-S $20 Spiked Shield, Variety 20A, MS64 PCGS. CAC. Ex: S.S. Central America, SSCA 2089. More than 5,000 1857-S double eagles were recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck. The recovery of the coins altered the numismatic landscape of not only the 1857-S but the entire Type One double eagle series, as collectors suddenly had the ability to acquire remarkably high-end Type Coin coins. However, demand for the shipwreck coins means collectors often aggressively compete for them at auction, especially when the coins are CAC endorsed, as this piece is. The coin displays the traditional vibrant and frosty orange-gold luster characteristic of S.S.C.A. coins, with sharp design elements. Only some light grazes on Liberty's cheek limit the grade. The 1857-S double eagles recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck are among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins by Jeff Garrett.(Registry values: P2)
