Description

1866 Seated Liberty Dollar, MS64
With Motto, Popular First-Year Type Coin

1866 $1 Motto MS64 PCGS. The design of the silver dollar was modified to include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a ribbon on the reverse in 1866, creating a popular new design type. A nominal mintage of 48,900 business-strike specimens was accomplished at the Philadelphia Mint, and few examples were saved by contemporary collectors. MS64-graded survivors are seldom encountered in today's market and finer coins are very rare. This attractive Choice specimen exhibits sharply detailed design elements in most areas, with just the slightest touch of softness on some star centers. The lightly marked surfaces display highlights of greenish-gold toning, with satiny mint luster and a few hints of prooflike reflectivity in the fields. Population: 18 in 64 (2 in 64+), 8 finer (1/16).
