Description

1971-D Lincoln Cent
Struck on a Split Planchet
Split Before Strike

1971-D 1C Lincoln Cent -- Struck on a Split Planchet, Split Before Strike -- NGC. 1.6 grams. A typical 1971-D cent weighs 3.1 grams. A cent planchet split in two, along the horizontal axis, prior to the strike. At least one of the split planchet halves was struck by 1971-D cent dies. Because the planchet was thin, it failed to completely fill the dies, causing a soft strike on the central devices and a portrait "ghost" on the reverse. The internal planchet texture is evident on the obverse highpoints. The coin has the appearance of an off-center strike toward 2:30, but the design is complete, indicating it is instead an uncentered broadstrike, with an arc of unstruck surface centered at 9:30. NGC has not offered a grade, but the coin is Mint State. One cause for a split planchet could be a layer of trapped gas within the planchet strip.
