1856 Judd-177 Half Cent, PR64
Regular Dies Trial Strike
1856 E1/2C Half Cent, Judd-177, Pollock-205, R.5, PR64 PCGS.
CAC. Regular die trials striking for the half cent, attributed
as Breen-2b or 2c in his Half Cent Encyclopedia. Struck in
copper-nickel with a plain edge. Breen reported two compositions of
the copper-nickel planchets. His B-2b is recorded as 90% copper and
10% nickel, and B-2c is recorded as 88% copper and 12% nickel. It
is impossible to distinguish between them without metallurgical
testing. This Choice proof offers smooth walnut-tan surfaces. The
centers are well brought up although the broad rims are softly
impressed. Both sides are lightly reflective. Population: 14 in 64
